Health In Mexico.

Health, Insurance, Medical Evacuation, Doctors and Hospitals in Mexico

Health insurance, hospitals, doctors and medical air evacuation (including evacuation of your pets) are covered in this section. After much deliberation, "Mexico" Mike has teamed up with Mark Reeves, MD, who has an office iin El Paso and practices in Cd. Juarez, Mexico to provide medical referrals to hospitals, doctors and dentists in Mexico. Please contact "Mexico" Mike for a medical referral if you need medical care in Mexico.

Many travelers to Mexico for what is called "medical tourism." Because the cost of medical care in Mexico is from 50-70 percent less expensive than the same medical care in the United States, savvy travelers are choosing Mexico for their elective surgeries. Additionally, Mexican folk medicine, using herbs and curanderas (healers) attracts the more adventurous. Cancer clinics and AIDS clinic proliferate, especially on the Mexican border regions. Some people have sworn by them and other have sworn at them. I don't have an opinion, except to say that some Mexican medical clinics specializing in cancer and AIDS treatment are indeed rip offs. At this point, I can't tell you how to decide, but if you have a story about your own experience, let me know.

Mexican dentists are well-known for doing quality work at reasonable prices, especially on the border. Many "Winter Texans" in my area of the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, swear by them, and frankly, so do I.

Eventually, I will have a list of dentists and physicians to choose from.

Mexican pharmacies are bargains -- selling the same product (in most cases -- know what ingredients you do and don't want) for abut half of US prices and sometimes cheaper. Ignore those stories planted by the US drug-makers about the quality being less. Not true.

I have been getting my medicines in Mexico for years. Medicines in Mexico are somewhat less expensive in the interior of Mexico than on the Mexican-US borders, but they are almost always a bargain. And you don't need a prescription, except for controlled substances, and not for all of them. Dr. Reeves corrected me on the matter of codeine. My personal experience is that is nearly impossible to obtain. He said that Tylenol #3 is available and I was just going to the wrong doctors. Now, whether you can get it back across the border is an issue I won't get into. I mention this because after dental surgery, all I've ever gotten from a dentist is Aleve. For me, that doesn't isn't strong enough (OK, I am a wimp), so get a prescription for something stronger from your US physician -- if you have one. If not, you're just going to have to pray and tough it out.
