Being Transfered To Mexico?

Working for Corporations in Mexico

(Excerpted From Live Better South of the Border, 4th Edition)
( Click To Order)

If you work for an international company that transfers you to Mexico, the hard part of moving to Mexico in order to work in Mexico will be done for you. Your company will have to get an FM-2 or FM-3 for you, which gives you permission to work in the country. While technically the FM-2 is the “working” visa, the FM-3 is more commonly used.

When MTV seduced me with the glamour of “being in the film industry,” they got me an FM-3. (Hollywood called, I answered, and got dumped when they hired Mexicans who worked cheaper. See, things work that way on both sides of the border. It’s called greedy capitalism. After firing me at five in the morning, they were so cheap they wouldn’t even buy me a bus ticket from Veracruz to Mexico City. Let’s just say that everything you’ve heard about Hollywood being cutthroat and inhuman is true. If Hollywood calls you, put them on hold.)

Your company probably also has a human relations person who will help you find housing and help your family to acclimate. The housing part is easy. They’ll find you something in an “executive” part of town, which will cost way more than most of my housing price ranges.

Family and Social Adjustments

The hard part to living abroad in any country is helping your family adjust to living in a new culture. New in this edition are suggestions for helping kids to adapt. Spouses will need help too. Joining a newcomer’s club will help ease the transition. Learning to fit in with your Mexican associates in both business and social situations is a necessity. Family is very, very important in Mexico. Your career can be made or broken by how well you assimilate.

Mexican Business Customs

Learning the social cutoms for working in Mexico can make or break you. Live Better South of hte Border and my Special Report, "Working In Mexico" have complete details on this.
