The US-Mexico border is NOT closed to southbound traffic. Americans are as free to come and go as they ever have been. The Mexico-US border is restricted to Mexican citizens with a "necessary" reason to cross into the USA. So if you were waiting for "the border to open up," before your trip, your wait is over. Come on down.

prepared. I'm honor-bound to tell you that the risk of Covid is still real in Mexico, especially when people don't practice social distancing - just as it is in the United States.
