Decades of first hand Mexico tourism information from me, "Mexico" Mike Nelson.

Agua Blanca Resort

The Agua Blanca Resort is one of my very favorite hot springs retreats in all of Mexico. Agua Blanca does not get nearly enough tourists, but for those of us who appreciate healing hot springs, nature, and a thoroughly restful place to unwind and just relax, Agua Blanca Canyon Resort is perfect. The water is basically warm, not hot, but it is very definitely healing and makes for a good soak. There is a small waterfall nearby.

Monarch Butterfly Preserve

Agua Blanca is located close enough to the Monarch Butterfly Preserves in Michoacan and Mexico states to stay here and day trip.

With “Mexico” Mike as our partner, we felt safe & enjoyed our trip. He delivered more than promised.

A Childhood Dream Come True

This small hotel is run by the very personable Tomas and Anita Eschenburg, who came here as children and remembered its beauty and enchantment. The Agua Blanca had fallen on hard times in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The owner was trying not to sell the property to a conglomerate that wanted to put up condos in this beautiful natural location. Fortunately for all of us, Tomas and Anita contacted him and he was willing to sell to them because they love the place.

There is something magical about the atmosphere here. I could tell you stories of romance, healing, and life changes that took place here for me. Better yet, come on down and experience them yourself.

There are 20 rooms, each individually decorated with handicrafts. They are spread out in a domino pattern so that each has an unobstructed view of the lush grounds and vegetation.

There is a restaurant on the grounds serving healthy, home-cooked meals. There is one large pool and three smaller ones for soaking. The water is not overly hot, about 90F. The minerals have been touted as healing since the times of the Tarascans. During the 1930s and 1940s a German physician, Dr. Heinrich Petters treated patients with a spa regimen here. According to Dr. Petters, the waters:

  • Speed up the healing of interior and exterior wounds
  • Improves cases of arthritis and/or rheumatism
  • Improves the function of the kidneys and liver
  • Decreases blood pressure
  • Improves digestion
  • Normalizes sleeping problems
  • Produces a state of a balanced nervous system in cases of exhaustion
  • Increases the sensation of well-being

Agua Blanca is near the town of Jungapeo in the eastern end of Michoacn state. It is a short distance off the toll road between Toluca and Morelia. Nearby are waterfalls, many more hot (and hotter) springs, Angangueo where the Monarch butterflies swarm in winter and the hills around are quite the treasure trove for birders.

I interviewed the owners, a nice, idealistic couple, for my book, Modern Mexico Through the Eyes of Modern Mexicans and theirs was the most popular chapter.
